KITCHEN PLANNING ADVICE

What is important to consider when renovating your kitchen? Here are 6 things to keep in mind when planning your future kitchen.

1. If you are in the process of altering the floor plan and perhaps tearing down or opening up a wall, try to find out if the wall is load-bearing. Load-bearing walls usually have to be bearing load assessed and relieved with beams, and in most cases entail greater costs.

2. If water and sewerage must be moved, the conditions for this must be carefully examined. Consult with a plumber if possible and enquire what costs will be incurred.

4. What should you prioritize? A built-in fridge and freezer is nice to look at but is significantly smaller both in depth and width than a freestanding one.

Do you need a microwave? This issue is often wrestled with by our customers. A simple solution is to install a 600 mm wide base cabinet.

The length and character of the work surface is perhaps the most important aspect of the kitchen. Think about this carefully. How much storage do you need? Can you fit grandma's porcelain and your trinkets?

6. A walk passage between a kitchen island, dining table and worktop should be at least 120 cm. If you need it narrow, you can go down to 90 cm but then it can start to feel crowded. When the dishwasher or drawers are opened there's not much space left over. A dining area needs a large amount of space. The width should be about 250 cm if chairs and tables are given enough space.

3. Modern kitchens need a lot of electric wiring. A dishwasher, for example, usually draws about 2200 watts during the drying process. This means that the dishwasher needs a separate, dedicated 10 amp fuse and wire.

A kettle with good output may also need about 2000 watts to boil water quickly. It is not uncommon to need 3-6 separate connections that are each wired to a 10 amp fuse. Consult with a knowledgeable electrician and plan carefully.

The lighting of the kitchen is very important for atmosphere and good working conditions. Keep this in mind when planning your kitchen.

5. A beautiful kitchen is not always a good kitchen to work in. The kitchen is a workplace and its functionality is the most important thing to take into account. Make sure to create the conditions for a good workflow in the kitchen.

- The location of the oven/hob should not be too close to the wall. If possible, leave a space of at least 20 cm. This will leave you more room to maneuvre your pots and pans.

- The other central part of a kitchen is the sink. Try to have at least 80 cm between sink and stove.

- Since we sort waste a lot nowadays, is it perhaps better with an 80 cm cabinet rather than a 60 cm cabinet?

- The dishwasher is usually best situated right next to the sink cabinet. Plates should be scraped off and glass rinsed out before insertion. If you want to place the dishwasher next to a wall or with an exposed side, a cover panel is required.

- Fridge and freezer should not be too isolated and preferably have a work area close by. Imagine a triangle for a good workflow.

- A good kitchen hood is a must in a modern kitchen. Keep in mind that our narrower wall cabinets and our sliding door cabinets, are too small for built-in ventilation. The depth of the cabinet must be at least 315 mm.
